Utilizing
sound waves to generate images of the heart, this test is used to evaluate
the strength of the heart muscle, the function of the heart valves and
the size and shape of many other structures. It is one of the most useful
tools your cardiologist has in order to diagnose a problem. The
test is painless. The patient is asked to lie on a table and relax. Sometimes,
babies can be kept in the parent's arms. A smooth, gel-like substance
is applied to the chest and a small probe or transducer is gently placed
on the skin. The
patient is able to see his or her heart beating on a monitor.
