James G. Henry, MD, FACC

Dr. Henry was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He trained in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since 1977, he has been serving the pediatric cardiology needs of the children of the Tampa Bay area and the entire west coast of Florida. As the senior member of the Pediatric Cardiology group, he takes great pride in its continuing growth and in directing quality management.

Jorge M. Giroud, MD, FACC
Invasive Cardiology
Affiliate Associate Professor Pediatrics, USF

Dr. Giroud was born in Cuba and came to the United States as a young child. He graduated from medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and completed his pediatric residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami, in Miami, Florida. Following a brief period as a general pediatrician in the United States Navy, he returned to Miami where he completed both a pediatric cardiology and pediatric critical care fellowship. Dr. Giroud initially obtained board certification in both areas and currently is board certified in pediatric cardiology. Dr. Giroud has been practicing pediatric cardiology in the Tampa Bay Area since 1983. He has been instrumental in the development of pediatric Interventional Cardiology for the region, allowing many cardiac defects to be improved or corrected without the need for surgical interventions.

In addition to invasive cardiology, Dr. Giroud's interests include public health policy, the application
of computer technology to the practice of medicine, and acting as an advocate for the rights of quality medical care for children with heart disease. He has served as chairman for the Cardiac Advisory Council for Children's Medical Services and also is a past President of the Florida Association of Pediatric Cardiologists.

Richard M. Martinez, MD, FACC
Non-Invasive Cardiology
Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, USF

Dr. Martinez was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa, completed undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, and graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to complete his residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Martinez then moved back to Tampa Bay to join Pediatric Cardiology Associates and the department of pediatrics at the University of South Florida, College of Medicine in 1986. Since that time, Dr. Martinez has served as the Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology at All Children's Hospital, 1992-1999; the Chief of Staff at All Children's Hospital, 2000-2001, and most recently as the Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiology of All Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Martinez's primary interests are fetal and pediatric transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography as well as exercise testing. In addition, he has co-developed a program for adults with congenital heart disease; as a result continuing the care for children with congenital heart disease into adulthood.

Jorge McCormack, MD, FACC
Electrophysiology
Affiliate Associate Professor Pediatrics, USF
Chief Executive Officer, PCA

Dr. McCormack was born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico. After graduating from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, he performed his pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine where his interests in pediatric cardiology and, in particular, electrophysiology, developed. He was recipient of a National Institutes of Health Research Training award that sponsored his research in developmental electrophysiology during his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Miami. His research work earned third place in the American Academy of Pediatrics Young Investigators Award.

After completion of his training in Pediatric Cardiology, he went to Loma Linda University, becoming a member of Pediatric Cardiac transplant program while researching transplant electrophysiology. In 1992, he moved to the Tampa Bay area and participated in the creation of a Pediatric Heart Transplant program at All Children's Hospital. He also developed a Pediatric Electrophysiology Program at Tampa General and, more recently, at Tampa Children's Hospital and All Children's Hospital. His practice is dedicated to Pediatric Electrophysiology including the management of arrhythmias, pacemakers and syncope.

He was the Chief Executive Officer of Pediatric Cardiology Associates from 1999-2009. He is currently a member of the Pediatrix National Cardiac Advisory Council.

Alfred Asante-Korang, MD, FACC
Transplant Cardiology, General Cardiology
Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, USF

Dr. Asante-Korang graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School. He completed a four-year pediatric residency in England at University of Liverpool/Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital where he obtained his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) qualification in 1991. In 1993, Dr. Asante-Korang was a recipient of the prestigious Sydney Windsor Cardiology Fellowship award at Dalhousie University, Canada. He then moved to the United States where he completed a senior residency in 1994 at the University of Chicago Children's Hospital. In 1996 he completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh/Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he developed his interest in transplant cardiology.

Dr. Asante-Korang joined Pediatric Cardiology Associates in 1996 and has been the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at All Children’s Hospital/University of South Florida since September 2004. He continues to focus his practice in cardiac transplantation, general pediatric cardiology, echocardiography and diagnostic cardiac catheterizations.

James C. Huhta, MD, FACC
Perinatal Cardiology
Professor of Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, USF

Dr. Huhta completed a master’s degree in bioengineering at the University of Michigan before attending medical school at the University of Wisconsin. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Alabama and his pediatric cardiology fellowship training at Mayo Clinic, where he started the fetal echocardiography program in 1978. He then was an Honorary Senior Registrar at the Hospital for Sick Children in London. After six years at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, he was recruited by the University of Pennsylvania as Professor of Pediatrics and became Chief of Pediatric Cardiology Services at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During his time in Philadelphia, he started the Section of Perinatal Cardiology at Pennsylvania Hospital, our nation’s first hospital.

In 1996, Dr. Huhta moved to Tampa Bay where he is a member of the Congenital Heart Institute of Florida. He provides care at St Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa and serves as medical director of the perinatal program at All Children’s Hospital in St Petersburg. He is also a Professor at University of Tromso, Norway, and University of Florida.

Dr. Huhta was awarded the University of South Florida’s Daicoff-Andrews Endowed Chair in Perinatal Cardiology from 2003-2008. He has authored over 225 articles, books and chapters and his newest book, which he co-authored with Drs. Bader and Hornberger, is titled The Perinatal Cardiology Handbook.

In July 2008, he joined the Pediatrix team and is currently the lead physician in the fetal echocardiography network.

Elsa J. Suh, MD, FACC
Invasive Cardiology

Dr.Suh attended Smith College in Massachusetts, where she graduated magna cum laude in biochemistry. She received her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed her internship and pediatric residency training at New York University Medical Center.

She obtained a research grant from the American Heart Association as a cardiology fellow in basic science and carried out her research work at the Rockefeller University/Cornell Medical Center in New York. She continued her clinical pediatric cardiology fellowship training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). After receiving additional training in interventional cardiology at CHOP, she remained on medical staff at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as an Interventional cardiology attending and as their Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Suh moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1996. Her work focuses on invasive cardiology, including
sophisticated cardiac catheterizations and therapeutic interventions, which may eliminate the need for openheart surgery in children and adults with congenital heart defects. She has also performed fetal cardiac interventions, which are only offered at less than five centers in the world.

Outside of her professional life, she is an accomplished classical pianist, who also enjoys outdoor sports as skiing and playing competitive tennis. She adores her Labrador Retriever and is actively involved in animal rescue.

J. Blaine John, MD
Non-Invasive and Fetal Cardiology

Dr. John is a native Floridian, born and raised in Pensacola. He was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College in North Carolina, where he designed his own major in Medical Humanities. He graduated cum laude as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he graduated with honors as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. John then received the MAP-Reader's Digest International Fellowship and the Christian Medical Society's Westra Fellowship for his medical missionary work in Zambia, Africa. Dr. John returned to Florida and completed a Pediatrics Residency at the University of Florida. He trained in Pediatric Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he then completed advanced training in Non-Invasive and Fetal Cardiology.

Dr. John's clinical interests include echocardiography, fetal cardiology, and intensive care cardiology. He also enjoys the time he spends teaching the medical students and residents of the University of South Florida. He is board certified in Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. John is the proud father of three children.

Daniel E. McKenna, MD
Non-Invasive and Transplant Cardiology

Dr. McKenna was raised in Western New York. He was awarded his bachelor of arts degree with honors from Hamilton College. He received his medical degree from The State University of New York at Buffalo and completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, New York. He completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at University of Pittsburgh/Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where developed an interest in cardiac imaging and transplant cardiology.

Dr. McKenna’s clinical interests include pediatric echocardiography, pediatric transplant cardiology, and general pediatric cardiology. He enjoys teaching University of South Florida medical students and residents.

Stephanie A. Kurtz, MD
Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Kurtz was born and raised in mid-Michigan. She was awarded a bachelor of science degree from Central Michigan University in Biological Sciences and received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Kurtz completed her pediatric residency at University of South Florida/All Children’s Hospital in the Tampa Bay area and she completed her pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Dr. Kurtz’s clinical interests include pediatric echocardiography, including fetal and transesophageal echocardiography. She also has an interest in non-invasive electrophysiology

Frances Arrillaga, MD
Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Arrillaga, a native of Puerto Rico, earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biochemistry at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. She received her medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico in 1991. She relocated to Miami, Florida, where she trained in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. She was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Miami between 1994 and 1996. Dr. Arrillaga practiced pediatric cardiology for two years in Louisville, Kentucky, where she was named Gratis Clinic instructor at University of Louisville and then moved back to Miami, where she practiced as an attending pediatric cardiologist at several hospitals.

Dr. Arrillaga joined Pediatric Cardiology Associates in 2006. Her focus is outpatient cardiology and hospital consultations. She is currently board certified in pediatric cardiology. Dr. Arrillaga is the proud mother of two beautiful girls and lives with her family in Tampa.

Anna Bernus, MD, FAAP
Invasive and Non-Invasive Cardiology, Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Dr. Bernus was born in Girona (Catalonia, Spain) and first came to the United States at age 16 as a high school exchange student. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in molecular and cell biology. She began medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara under the Fifth Pathway Program, completing her medical degree at the New York Medical College in 2001. Dr. Bernus completed her pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in 2004. She completed her pediatric cardiology fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital in Denver where she remained as an instructor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology.

Dr. Bernus moved to California in 2007 to join the Loma Linda University Medical Center staff as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her work focuses on both, invasive cardiology including diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations, as well as non-invasive cardiology. She is also interested in idiopathic and associated pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Dr. Bernus is an active member of Heart Care International and Surgeon’s of Hope, with whom she has done several missions to Africa and Central America providing cardiac care to children.. Dr. Bernus moved to the Tampa Bay Area in the summer of 2009 when she joined Pediatric Cardiology Associates.

Javier H. Gonzalez, MD
Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Gonzalez was born in Bogota, Colombia. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and moved to the United States with his wife in 2000.

He completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Puerto Rico and relocated to Charleston, South Carolina where he completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. He continued his training through a second fellowship where he focused on advanced pediatric/congenital cardiovascular imaging. During his senior fellowship years, he was a recipient of a National Institutes of Health Research Training award, which sponsored his research in three-dimensional echocardiography and cardiovascular CT.

Dr. Gonzalez’s major interests include new techniques in cardiac imaging (particularly three-dimensional echocardiography and cardiac CT), cardiac intensive care and fetal cardiology. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents and he is the proud father of two beautiful girls.

Bhavya Trivedi, MD
Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Bhavya Trivedi was born in India and raised in New York and Florida. At the University of Miami School of Medicine, he completed his undergraduate, medical and doctoral degrees with a focus on neuroscience and electrophysiology. During that time he was the recipient of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute pre-doctoral fellowship.

He completed his pediatric residency at Duke University Medical Center where his interests in pediatric cardiology and electrophysiology were solidified. Dr. Trivedi remained at Duke for pediatric cardiology and electrophysiology training. His basic research interests included the embryonic development of the specialized cardiac conduction system and initiation of the heart beat. He also conducted clinical research pertaining to arrhythmias in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Dr. Trivedi moved to the Tampa Bay area in 2009 with a dedicated practice for pediatric electrophysiology, including the management of arrhythmias, pacemakers and syncope. His interests include arrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease as well as catheter ablation procedures for the treatment of arrhythmias.

Jeremy Ringewald, MD
Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Ringewald was born and raised in the Chicago, Illinois area. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Illinois. He completed his pediatric residency in 1997 at The Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital /Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2000, he completed his general pediatric cardiology fellowship at The Children’s Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University. The following year Dr. Ringewald completed an additional fellowship in pediatric interventional cardiac catheterization at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Ringewald spent his first three years following training at the Children’s Hospital at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City. He was the state’s first pediatric interventional cardiologist and performed many Oklahoma state firsts including the first transcatheter device closure for atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and ventricular septal defect.

In 2004, Dr. Ringewald moved to the Children’s Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He served as Co-Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and contributed to several Federal Drug Administration trials involving the clinical testing of new devices and medications. In Charleston he also served as the medical director of the heart transplant program. Under his leadership the program expanded in size and complexity, and performed the first Berlin Heart (ventricular assist device) implantation in the Carolinas.

Dr. Ringewald moved to the Tampa Bay area in 2009. His primary clinical interests continue to include both invasive and transplant pediatric cardiology. He also has extensive experience in the cardiac catheterization of adults with congenital heart disease. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
