Also known as an exercise test, a stress test requires a patient to either run on a treadmill or pedal a bicycle while a cardiologist monitors the electrocardiogram and blood pressure. In some cases, the cardiologist may also measure the patient's airflow. The test ends when the patient reaches a point of fatigue or when a problem is identified.

A cardiologist utilizes these tests to objectively measure the patient's exercise capacity and decide on the appropriate level of physical activity or sports participation allowable. The test is also proven useful in evaluating chest pain and heart rhythm problems.
